In striking coloring, reduced on red, yellow and blue and with woodcut-like outlines the portrait of the Prince of Wales Prince Charles is depicted. The sheet is from a series of portraits of famous and powerful personalities who the artist wants to criticize mockingly by means of exaggerated pop aesthetic. Otto Muehl is one of the most important representatives and co-founders of the Vienna Actionism. In the 1960s, he organized happenings in form of orgiastic rituals, with which he tried to overcome sexual and religious taboos and constraints.
The silkscreen in colors is dedicated lower right in pencil ‘CYMI dem Star zahlreicher (?) in Dankbarkeit gewidmet Otto’ and signed, dated and titled also lower right in pencil ‘Muehl 67 Price Charles’. The sheet bears several tears (up to 8 cm) in the edges, thereof one extending into the image. Additionally there are some few horizontal creases with associated paint losses. The image measures 55.5 x 40.5 cm, the sheet measures 59.6 x 44.5 cm. (fea)
Otto Muehl (1925-2013)
Otto Muehl was born in the Austrian Grodnau in 1925. After the war, he first studied art education at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna to become a teacher and worked as an art therapist on the side. Along with Hermann Nitsch he performed his first action event in the early 1960s. His art changed from the traditional compositional painting towards the so-called Wiener activism with a focus on psycho-dramatic actions and sexual dynamics. (fea/cru)
