This is an excellent set of early Cowboy Western leather chaps made by Otto Ernst in Sheridan, Wyoming. Otto Ernst (b.1872-d.1938) moved to Sheridan, Wyoming in 1900 and worked saddle making for George Parmeter. In 1902 Otto and John Buckley opened Ernst-Buckley Saddlery, continued until 1907 when Otto bought out Buckleys shares. The saddlery then changed names to Otto Ernst Saddlery. These are from circa 1910-1930. These are one of the finest set of chaps we have seen done by Otto Ernst. The chaps show brass nickel conchos with brass tacks in the shapes of gamblers card suits such as spades, diamond, clovers, and hearts. The pieces have double conchos on both sides (extra fancy, rarely seen) and also have a bulleyes and star pattern above and below the card suits. These are in excellent condition. The chaps were deaccessioned from the King's Saddlery Museum in Sheridan, Wyoming many years ago. From a private Billings, Montana cowboy collection. The batwing chaps are 35.5"L, each leg is 16"W, and the belt top is 40"L.
