Notable Continental Army officer from Maryland (1749–1794) who participated in numerous battles during the American Revolutionary War. ALS signed “O. H. Williams,” one page, 7.25 x 9.25, February 15, 1790. Letter to founding father Alexander Hamilton, in full: “Your letter, inclosing the extract of a letter from the Collector of the district of Chester, is received. As the Collector does not mention the instance in which the matter he represents did occur I cannot undertake to say that it did not occur. The probability is that some illegality in respect to the business may have given cause for the Collectors enquiries, as under the late laws of this State the thing he represents was strictly proper; and in the hurry of business, especially in the commencement of the new System, the Deputy Collector in this district, who is at present not in town, might have pursued the do Custom—But it has not been persisted in: nor will any such prerogative be assumed in future by the Officers in this district.” In fine condition, with splitting along horizontal fold. Accompanied by an engraved portrait of Williams bearing a facsimile signature.
