Austrian painter and poet (1886–1980) best known for his distinctively expressionistic portraits and landscapes. ALS in German, one page both sides, 5.75 x 8.25, personal letterhead, July 17, 1961. Letter to Benton Scott in Paris. In part (translated): “I regret very much to have to tell you that the painting of which you sent me a photo, is not my work. I never painted such genre scenes as you can find out for yourself looking through Hans Maria Wingler K[okoschka] and the work of the painter…Since my work has become known now everywhere, a flood of fakes and silly attributions makes it difficult for me to answer requests similar to yours. With your kind permission I keep the photo for my already large collections of fakes and works attributes to me through error…” In fine condition, with a few light creases and wrinkles. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope.
