Irish writer and leader of the Aesthetic Movement, and author of such works as The Picture of Dorian Gray, The Importance of Being Earnest, and The Happy Prince. Incredible 7.5 x 13 Sarony imperial photo of Wilde nattily dressed in his usual dandy attire, copyright 1882, signed in black ink, “Oscar Wilde ‘rien n’est vrai, que le beau, March 8.” Wilde’s quote translates to “Only the beautiful is true.” Beautifully framed to an overall size of 12.5 x 18. In very good condition, with light overall spotting to the image, some scattered light toning and soiling, and some minor surface loss to corners.

Inscribed with a quotation from French poet Alfre de Musset—a sentiment that was basically Wilde’s motto—this uniquely large-format portrait, taken by successful celebrity photographer Napoleon Sarony, was captured during Wilde’s 1882 lecture tour of the United States to promote regional performances of the Gilbert and Sullivan opera, ‘Patience.’ When Wilde arrived at Sarony’s studio, the photographer exclaimed, ‘A picturesque subject indeed!’ He then went about attiring the writer in various outfits—a fur-lined overcoat pictured here in addition to evening dress, and most notably, a velvet jacket with ribbon piping, knee breeches, silk stockings, and gleaming pumps with Wild resembling a marionette. The offered pose was one of about 27 taken by Sarony that day. Any image of Wilde is rare, with an oversized signed example such as this virtually nonexistent.
