Irish writer and leader of the Aesthetic Movement, and author of such works as The Picture of Dorian Gray, The Importance of Being Earnest, and The Happy Prince. Ink signature, “Oscar Wilde, Kansas,” on an off-white 5 x 2.5 faintly-lined slip. In very good condition, with scattered toning and soiling, light show-through from writing on reverse, and fragile ink erosion to the paraph and the word “Kansas.”

Wilde delivered a series of graceful and poetic speeches during a yearlong tour of the United States, which included a stop in Kansas from April 19–22, 1882. At times delivering as many as six lectures per week, Wilde appeared in Leavenworth on April 19, at Topeka’s Opera House on April 20, in Lawrence on April 21, and in Atchison on April 22. During one of those midwestern stops, Wilde graciously acquiesced to an autograph request, adding the reminder of which state played host to the encounter.
