American writer and diplomat (1819-1891) who, after a long and successful career as a poet, satirist, and essayist, served as ambassador to the Kingdom of Spain to the Court of St. James's. ALS signed “J. R. Lowell,” one page, 3.75 x 6, black-bordered 10 Lowndes Square letterhead, December 22, 1881. Handwritten letter to "Stedman," presumably the influential poet, critic, and essayist Edmund Clarence Stedman. In full: "Permit me to recall myself to your recollection by introducing Mr. Oscar Wilde. I am sure I could not do it in a more agreeable way, & I beg you to be helpful to him so far as may be in your power." In fine condition. An intriguing and remarkable literary letter, connecting some of the most important literary personalities of the 19th century.
