American lyricist (1895–1960) best known for his collaborations with Richard Rodgers on the songs for such Broadway hits as Oklahoma, The King and I, and The Sound of Music. TLS, one onionskin page, 7.25 x 10.5, personal letterhead, December 20, 1945. Hammerstein apologies for his delay in responding to an inquiry regarding his father-in-law, master mariner Henry James Blanchard. In part: “I am sorry I did not answer you sooner and I realize that if the book is not ready by Christmas, it is my fault and not yours. As to the two things you requested, the date of Mr. Blanchard’s death was 1931. The year of his birth, I don’t remember at the moment, but it is of course on the papers which are in your possession…I am looking forward to receiving the book from you as soon as you can possibly finish it.” In fine condition, with some irregular ink adhesion to parts of his signature.
