Interesting hand painted jardiniere decorated with roses by the Osborne Art Studio. Stands just over 8 1/2" tall and measures approximately 9" across the widest spot. Condition is very good-to-excellent, with no chips, cracks, or repairs.
Underside is a virtual treasure trove of information. It's stamped with Osborne Mark #8, found in use from 1940 to 1973. The blank is stamped with a late mark for the Trenton Potteries Co., Trenton, NJ. Also on the bottom is the original Osborne price sticker, reflecting an original retail price of $17.50 for the jardiniere. The address on the price sticker is 6039 N.W. Hwy. Alan Reed, in the Encyclopedia of Pickard China, says that Osborne moved to that location in 1950. Lehner's Encyclopedia of U.S. Marks says that in 1950 the Trenton Potteries Co. was dissolved as such, and operated just as a division of the Crane Company, despite being listed in the Trenton city directories through the 1960s. Osborne himself died around 1969, and the studio ceased operation in 1973.
By the time this piece was manufactured, it was pretty much evident that the better days of china decorating and pottery making had long since passed for these two companies.
Member, Pickard Collectors Club.
