ORVILLE WRIGHT (1871-1948). Aviation pioneer. Orville, together with his brother Wilbur, designed and built the world's first successful airplane. On December 17, 1903, they made the world's first flight in a powered, heavier-than-air machine at Kitty Hawk, NC. Orville piloted the plane on this first flight of 120 feet, having won the honor through the toss of a coin. Only a handful of people witnessed this momentous event, and only three or four newspapers carried accounts of the flight over the next few days. The first technical description of the machine and the flights did not appear until March 1904, and then in a magazine titled "Gleanings in Bee Culture." The Wrights continued their experiments in the Dayton area over the next several years and, in 1908, they signed a contract with the U.S. Dept. of War for the first military airplane. In 1909, they formed a company in Germany with the backing of investors there and, later that year, formed the American Wright Company in New York City to manufacture planes in the U.S. Wilbur died of typhoid fever in 1912 and, in 1915, Orville retired to his own private laboratory, the Wright Aeronautical Laboratory, to continue his aviation research. Orville received numerous honors from governments and institutions from around the world. In 1965 he was elected to the Hall of Fame. Signed Card. 5" x 3 1/4". Boldly signed "Orville Wright". Excellent.
