Glossy 9 x 6 photo of a group of notable men, including dignitaries, kings, and Orville himself, in a field in Pau, France, watching the Wright Brothers flying demonstration, signed along the bottom in fountain pen, “Pau, March 17, 1909, Orville Wright.” Photo is affixed to an identical size trimmed mount. In very good condition, with very poor contrast to signature, irregular vertical edges, and a few scattered creases. At the time of signing, the Wrights were in Pau conducting training flights with three French aviators, Charles de Lambert, Paul Tissandier, and Captain Paul N. Lucas-Girardville. The small town on the South West of France became a hub of activity in the spring of 1909 as royal families and heads of state came to see the Wright Brothers fly. This photograph shows King Edward VII, of England (second from left), King Alfonso XIII, of Spain (fourth from left) and Orville Wright (fifth from left). Around this time, J.P. Morgan and King Victor Emmanuel III of Italy also rushed to Pau to witness similar Wright Brothers demonstrations.
