Orson Welles Signed Letter, '38 Mercury Playbill
Orson Welles Signed Letter to Joseph Cotten, 1938 Mercury Theatre Playbill, and Related Welles Documents. Highlighting this stunning lot is a letter from Orson Welles to Joseph Cotten, signed and addressed by Welles in blue ink, regarding The Immortal Story and Cotten's possible role in the Welles-directed 1968 film. Though Cotten turned down Welles' offer of "a fairly juicy role", the film went on to star Welles and Jeanne Moreau and is considered one of Welles' "art house" masterpieces. An intriguing peek into the mercurial Cotten-Welles relationship that lasted from 1936 to Welles' death. In Excellent condition, dated August 10, 1966, signed "Orson." A 1938 playbill from Welles' Mercury Theatre also accompanies the lot, featuring the theatre's inaugural productions Julius Caesar (with Joseph Cotten as Publius, and Welles as Marcus Brutus) and The Shoemakers' Holiday (with a young Vincent Price). In Very Fine condition with mild discoloration, a half-inch tear to back cover, and moderate age-toning. Also included: an original 16-page movie program for the 1948 theatrical release of Macbeth, directed by and starring Orson Welles; a May 9, 1938, Time magazine with Welles gracing the cover, featuring a five-page article on Welles and the Mercury Theatre's first season; and a program from Welles' 1981 Hollywood Foreign Press Association Tribute. In Very Good to Very Fine overall condition with mild discoloration to covers, a removed inner page in Tribute program, and minor nicks to Macbeth program cover. All in all, a fascinating set of highlights spanning the breadth of Welles' legendary career. Accompanied by a COA from PSA/DNA.

Shipping: Flat Material, Small (view shipping information)
