Ornate half-stock percussion plains rifle by Robinson of Philadelphia, .54 caliber rifled bore, medium to heavy weight octagon barrel, half stock with double keys. The rifle measures approx. 52-1/2” overall with 34-1/2” barrel. The barrel measures approx. 1-1/16” across the flats of the muzzle. This rifle shows very fine and extra deluxe engraving on tang, breech, and onto the barrel, and shows very fancy engraving on lock and hammer. The lock shows scene of dogs bracing bore. The breech shows four gold bands and ten gold dots. The muzzle shows a gold band and a wide silver band. The tang is beautifully engraved and shows a dog’s head portrait. The rifle is fully and beautifully mounted in engraved German silver. The patchbox shows a portrait of a stag. The cheekpiece shows a large German silver inlay and portrays the American buffalo. The rear of the stock behind the cheekpiece shows a fantastic inlay of an American eagle with spread wings. The belly of the stock shows engraved heel plate with three cap boxes engraved en suite. The sideplate and triggerguard are also beautifully engraved to match. There is a stylized spear and wreath inlayed to underside of the forestock. The forend cap is German silver and nicely inlayed. A correct to the period ramrod is included and the rifle is stocked in nicely burled walnut which is checkered at the wrist and shows double-set triggers. The metal surfaces show a light grey to brown patina finish with some minor erosion and surface pitting, generally very good overall with just a slight amount of carry and wear. The stock is good to very good, with some slight wear to the checkering, a couple of minor hairline cracks, minor scratches, but at least very good overall. The rear sight has been moved approx. 5” down the barrel and the original dovetail filled with a silver plug. The action is good and generally very good overall. This plains rifle shows fantastic American motifs, particularly the buffalo and American eagle. This rifle was housed in the Carl Cowles collection who was one of Southern California’s best and earliest collectors, who began his collection in the 1920’s and this rifle is pictured in our catalog sale of this collection in 1979.
