Ornate Antique European Flintlock Holster or Horseman's Pistol, perhaps of French, Dutch or Italian origin, NVSN, approx. .65 cal., 13'' two-stage round-to-octagonal barrel has cannon turnings at juncture, border engraving and crossed flags (or swords) at breech; domed lockplate has engraved rear teat, ornately detailed reinforced cock and frizzen-spring mountings; brass furniture includes engraved trigger guard with ''tree'' front finial and matching cast trigger, engraved bulbous buttcap having domed ''grotesque mask'' skull cracker and long side tangs, 1.75'' fancy wrist inlay, intricately pierced sideplate, two ferrules retaining the tapered hardwood ramrod; varnished walnut fullstock has leaf carving atop wrist, two ed areas flanking top tang, raised aprons at either side of lock. Made ca. 1750-1825. Condition is very good retaining no original metal finishes (may have been left bright); engraving is mostly sharp, as is stock carving; barrel is light gunmetal gray with scattered cleaned erosion and faint markings; brass shows a cleaned light patina. Stock is sound having several small areas of filler, minor repairs and added finish. Pistol appears to be in original flintlock configuration, with unbushed touchhole and correct parts. Action is extremely stiff, but functions; smoothbore shows light to moderate black-powder etching. Est.: $1,500-$2,000. (Antique)
