Ornate Antique European Flintlock Holster or Horseman's Pistol, unmarked as to maker but possibly French, Dutch or Italian in origin, NVSN, approx. .56 cal., unusually long 15.5'' round barrel has deeply incised leaf motif ahead of short octagonal breech; rounded lockplate has long rear teat, integral pan, decorative reinforced cock and frizzen; steel furniture includes engraved trigger guard with two relief ''plant-in-urn'' finials, early style trigger with curled tail, floral-incised bulbous buttcap having raised octagonal skull cracker and long side tangs, 2'' fancy shield inlay at wrist, large and intricately pierced sideplate, two fluted ferrules retaining the horn-tipped hardwood ramrod; varnished walnut fullstock has raised aprons at either side of lock. Made ca. 1700-1800. Condition is good retaining no original metal finishes but a cleaned gunmetal color (may have been left bright originally) showing scattered light-to-medium pitting. Stock is sound showing considerable worming and minor losses, areas of filler, minor repairs. Pistol appears to be in original flintlock configuration, with unbushed touchhole. Action is stiff, but functions; smoothbore shows deep black-powder erosion. Est.: $1,500-$2,000. (Antique)
