Original watercolor signed E.S. Paxson lower right which is his self-portrait shortly after he returned from the Philippines. Edgar Paxson was a patriot and served as a commanding officer in the Montana State Militia where he served with distinction in the Philippines and contracted malaria. The gap in his career and illness may have kept him from becoming as famous as Russell and Remington who were his contemporaries. Paxson was a favorite son of Montana and painted many murals and large artworks for the state capital and official buildings. His rendition of the Custer massacre was made famous by a beer advertisement before World War II but was published after his death and too late to aid his finances which were crippled by the number of years and time he spent on the Custer painting which consumed him for a decade. Accompanying this lot is three photographs of Paxson in uniform as a young cadet, middle-aged officer and as an old veteran. The watercolor measures approximately 15” in height by 10 ½” in width and is in good condition with a little staining and slight aging and a few minor water spots which should clean perfectly. This watercolor and the photographs surfaced about 5 years ago and were sold by Paxson’s descendants through an art dealer and later by little John’s at auction where they were purchased by Keith and Lori Candee. Est.: $1,500-$3,000.
