(Columbia, 1950) This retro-futuristic rocket ship fashioned in the style of Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers, is seen in the climactic closing chapter (from a total of 15 chapters) of Atom Man vs. Superman entitled, “Superman Saves the Universe.” In a final attempt to escape Superman’s grasp, arch nemesis Lex Luthor kidnaps Lois lane and escapes the planet in this rocket ship with Superman in pursuit! Measuring 15 ½ in. long, the ship’s middle-to-lower section is constructed of metal to withstand the pyrotechnics used to fire the rocket engines. The nose piece is constructed of wood, painted to resemble riveted metal panels with portholes inset around the perimeter. The spike mounted at the tip of the nose piece is made of aluminum. The miniature exhibits carbon deposits from the pyrotechnics; otherwise, remains in remarkably good condition considering its age. Atom Man vs. Super Man is considered by many to be one of the best serials ever made and this ship epitomizes a bygone era of movie making.
