Original receipt, signed by Susan McSween, wife of Alexander McSween, an attorney and businessman in Lincoln County, New Mexico and associate of businessmen and ranchers John Chisum, John Tunstall and also friend to Billy the Kid during the turbulent Lincoln County War period. Ultimately the principle adversaries became Tunstall and McSween (supported by Chisum) vs other Lincoln businessmen James Dolan, Lawrence Murphy and John H. Riley for control of land and business interests in the area. After Tunstall was murdered on February 18, 1878, the “war” heated up and several months later, Sheriff William Brady was killed by Tunstall loyalist “Regulators”. Then, on July 19, 1878, McSween and his supporters, including Billy the Kid, were besieged by Sheriff George Peppin and a group of his men who set the McSween building on fire. When McSween came out to surrender, he was shot and killed. Billy the Kid escaped capture in the ensuing fight (the basis for the movie “Young Guns”). This receipt is dated February 26th, 1879 (approx. 7 months after McSween’s death), and states in handwritten ink: “This is to certify that the amount of a draft drawn by J.L. Baker for $608.85, Six hundred and eight and 85/100 collected by A.A. McSween dec’d, has been credited to ac’t of John Newcomb. Mrs. Sue E. McSween”; also accompanied by an old postcard photo of the McSween store of Lincoln, New Mexico with title “Hangout of Billy the Kid”. A great piece of New Mexico Territorial ephemera. Est.: $ 1000-$3000.
