Original oil painting signed M. Billings and dated 1862 showing two sisters in classic Civil War era ladies dress. Moses Billings was born in 1809 in Amherst, New Hampshire and moved to Erie, Pennsylvania in 1829. Hewas also known to work in Cleveland for a short time in about 1833. He was well-known for being a able to capture a likeness in a portrait and he painted John Quincy Adams and Dolly Madison. The canvas is in near fineoriginal condition and remains in a beautiful patina. The frame is ornate and in very good plus condition and is very probably the original. The identity of the lovely young ladies is unknown but bound to be fromprominent Erie family. Provenance Sotheby’s New York. Est.: $6,000-$12,000.
