Original oil painting on board entitled Replacing a Lead Horse, signed lower left, “R. Farrington Elwell” with his brand and Arizona. The artwork measures 10” by 15-1/2”. The back of the painting shows R. C. Ranch,Wickenburg address and artist note ‘Return to Dell’. Probably intended for publication in a magazine. R. Farrington Elwell (1874-1962) was a well recognized artist who began his career as a graphic artist and in 1882 metBuffalo Bill Cody in Boston. Elwell illustrated advertising and publicity for Cody and became very friendly with Cody. The relationship was described as close as a father and son. Elwell worked for Cody as anengineer at his ranch. Elwell became acquainted with Frederich Remington, Teddy Roosevelt, Chief Iron Tail, and Anne Oakley taught his daughter how to shoot. He illustrated several books in the early 20thcentury. He continued his career through the 20th century as an illustrator and artist. Toward the end of his life he moved to Wickenburg and began painting for western art galleries. In the 1950’s he illustrated
