This extremely rare concept art was rendered by Willis O’Brien for his story idea about a whale graveyard, and prehistoric sea monsters attacking ships at sea. The project was one of the four concepts sold to the Nassour brothers, yet this one was never completed, although there was an attempt to revive the story by Ray Harryhausen in the late 1960s. The idea for the story came from a recorded dream of Alexander the Great. In the story, the warrior went down into the depths of the sea finding huge sea monsters, one so large it took three days just to swim past it. In the drawing, inside a cave, the half-human half-labyrinthodons hold a dying whale as two boys and bird look on. The illustration shows O’Brien's illustrative talents and bears his signature matting technique of pinstripe with an orange bevel. It is likely the only surviving remnant of his concept for this story, and a great example of the creative imagination of this Hollywood icon.
