<td width="100%">
This poster, for an exhibition which took place in 1955, is a faithful period reproduction of one of the plates from the Masters of the Poster series, which consisted of 256 small format lithographs of the best posters of the Belle Epoque. These collectible miniatures were painstakingly produced four per month from 1895 to 1900 by no less than the father of the poster, Jules Cheret, in conjunction with his printer Chaix.
The Maitres series was the outgrowth of the international poster craze of the 1890s, when the new advertising medium transformed the boulevards of Paris and other major cities into the "art gallery of the street. The artists featured in the 1955 exhibition were part of a group called les ?Nabis? ? a rebellious group of young student artists who banded together. Paul Sérusier galvanized Les Nabis, and provided the name and disseminated the example of Paul Gauguin among them. Pierre Bonnard, Edouard Vuillard and Maurice Denis became the best known of the group.
