Original U.S. Springfield Model 1873 Trapdoor Saddle Ring Carbine
This early production pre-Custer battle U.S. Springfield Model 1873 carbine has no butt trap, barrel band without provisions for a stacking swivel, high arch breechblock, front sight with bayonet stud and blade, rear sight with base graduated to 500 yards and leaf to 1200 yards. The lock has the two notch tumbler. The barrel correctly does not have the proof and inspection marks applied to rifle and carbines in the 40-60,000 serial range that were manufactured in Fiscal Year 1875. The top of the breechblock is marked "MODEL/1873" above an Eagle Head/crossed arrows and "U.S." on top, with "R" on the arch. The serial number is located on the breech ahead of the tang. The lock is marked with the eagle/shield motif and "U.S. / SPRINGFIELD / 1873". The stock, which has no visible marking, has the "US" marked buttplate.

Good. Overall the carbine has a smooth dark brown patina with some minor spotting. There is an absent chip near the upper tang and a dent from the breechblock lever, otherwise the stock is good with some minor dings and scratches, along with some moderate gouges. If this gun could talk, what a story it could tell! This is a true Indian War Era pre-Custer battle U.S. Model 1873 trapdoor carbine in totally original condition.
