<B>Original Suffrage Artwork for Life Magazine.</B></I> <I>Life</B></I> magazine was known for its series of special issues on the suffrage question, some satirical, some decidedly pro. This lot features a 12” x 16” piece of artwork signed Paul Stahr and entitled “Retouching an Old Masterpiece,” in which a woman is adding to the Constitution the words “and women” to the phrase “all men are created equal.” It is interesting to see how the idealized portrait of a woman here differs from the image of the harridan that is frequently present on anti-suffrage material.
