About the Artist from the Internet:
Scott makes authentic Japanese style swords and knives. The blades are ground of a similar carbon steel and clay tempered in the same manner as the originals. He makes molds of original sword parts and lost wax casts copy parts in addition to his own originals. Scott also makes historical and fantasy knives. A recent miniature was featured on the cover of Knives Illustrated Scott's swords are popular with martial artists as well as collectors in eleven countries.
When asked about his knives, Scott responded, "The knives and swords that I make are primarily in the Japanese style and fashion. I find their lore irresistible. While a Japanese blade is revered by its maker and owner, it doesn't stop there. The handle, sheath, and fittings are also harmonious with the blade. I admire this blend of art and the practical."

Description: When Scott Slobodian began traveling to the Milan knife show a number of years back, he was greatly inspired by the European dagger. While his work continues to have a strong Japanese focus, he began making pieces derived from this new found interest.
The long, thin 440C stainless steel blade makes quite an impact and leads neatly into the cast sterling silver guard. The guard was cast by Scott using the lost wax technique and is one-of-a-kind, as the mold is destroyed in the process of creation. The guard has an antiqued finish and has been textured in several areas for contrast. The pommel is cast using the same technique and holds a dramatic Brazilian star quartz featuring a strong asterism. An asterism is an effect exhibited on some minerals causing it to reflect a billowy, star-like formation of concentrated light which moves around when the mineral is rotated. Asterism is caused by dense inclusions of tiny, parallel, slender, fibers in the mineral which cause the light to reflect in such an interesting manner. The quartz in the pommel has a strong six rayed "star". The stabilized spalted oak handle has been carved and shows tremendous swirling detail in its grain. Eight pins at the center provide a nice bit of detail. Exceptional fit and finish throughout.
