Original Republic of Texas document issued for pay due in the amount of $127 to a member of Captain Jack Hays’s Spy Company, dated March 17th, 1854, approx. 10” x 10-1/2” overall and filled-in by hand, in ink script, noting that George Voss(deceased) is the subject of the claim for service in Capt. Hays Spy Company in 1842 and that the claim “is sufficiently authenticated to authorise (sp) the auditing of the same under the laws of the late Republic of Texas”, signed by theComptroller and Auditor. The document is in overall very good condition showing some slight yellowing and folds, some slight edge fraying and a small edge tear at the top but nothing damaging to the content of this very rare piece of earlyTexas history. Accompanying information indicates that Johann George Andreas Voss was a survivor of the Goliad Massacre and later one of the Bexar prisoners in the Perote fortress. He was born on May 19, 1809 in Germany and came to San Antonio in 1835 to join the Texas Army but was seized by Mexican authorities and thrown in prison. After his release, he fought on the side of the Republic of Texas where he is reported to have seen “a great deal of frontier service”. He died sometime
