Original Photo Depicting Cow Kachinas
And several other unidentified Kachinas below the Hopi village of Moemcopi. By Harmon Percy Marble. Dated 1917. 20" x 16 1/2". The Hopi Indians graze many cattle, so the appearance of the cow Kachinas at a ceremony is, in a sense, a prayer for abundant, healthy herds of cattle. Harmon Percy Marble. Born Nov 5, 2870, in Pawnee County Nebraska, and married his wife, Myrtle, in 1892. He was, indeed, employed by and/or the owner of several Nebraska newspapers, before selling his interests in 1911 and entering the Indian Service. This career change grew out of his appointment in 1910 to a federal commission to determine the competency of Omaha Indians. In addition to his assignments with the Menominee in Wisconsin, the Sioux in South Dakota, and the Navajo in Arizona, Marble was assigned to the Southern Pueblo Indians in New Mexico.
