Original "Penny Dreadfuls" or Vinegar Valentines - A Group of 24. New York: John McLaughlin, Ex-Library. Good Condition. Circa 1860. Sarcastic COLOR comics printed on pulp paper, known as "Vinegar Valentines" or "Penny Dreadfuls" because they cost a penny and were dreadful. Many carry the "H." for the American cartoonist Charles Howard. Not many survived due to the cheap pulp paper. 18 with small edge chips or tears as follows: A Bag of Wind, Scandal-Monger, A Jeweler's Sign, Ill-Bred, A Shoddyite, Gag and Giddy Girl, A Fat Slob, An Old Skin, Sleepy-Head, A Feminine Man, False All Over, So Clevah Ye Know, Scare-Crow, A Tailor's Dummy, Weighed and Found Wanting, Jumping-Jack, Would-Be Aristocrat & Used Up. 6 show some loss and tears as follows: A Cabbage Head, A VERY LOUD COON, Dude, Jilted, A Bad Habit & An Old Hen. 9 1/8" wide by 21" tall, colors still bright, unbound as issued.
