Original Noel Coward autograph poem signed. The playwright displays his legendary wit here in a poem for Mary MacArthur, young daughter of actress Helen Hayes who would die of polio at the age of 19. Handwritten poem reads in full ''With pleasure Miss MacArthur dear / I venture to inscribe / The following polite, sincere / And gentle diatribe / To one fact pray be reconciled / Admit no 'ifs' nor 'buts' / Your mother is an actress, child / And consequents, 'Nuts!' / There's one more fact that you must list / And face, for good or bad / Your father is a Dramatist / And obviously mad / And circumstances change / Your mother's and your father's friends / Are certain to be strange / In all this odd eccentric clan / Just one exception shines / The talented and witty man / Who wrote these charming lines / Noel Coward / May 33''. On blank book page measuring 7'' x 8.25''. Light foxing, else near fine.
