Master's Journal of the Clipper Ship "Surprise", 1,261 tons, of New York (AA Low & Bros., Agents) kept for her Master, Philip Dunaresq on a Voyage from New York to San Francisco, Hong Kong, and London. Entries are Made daily from Dec. 30th, 1850 throgh Nov. 11th, 1851. 251 pages. Dumaresq was known as "the Prince of Captains". This journal though kept in considerable detail lacks the 42 day passage to NY. She was built by Samuel Hall in East Boston, and this was her first voyage. (See Howe & Mathews: AMERICAN CLIPPER SHIPS.) Near Fine and snuggly housed in a custom-made deep burnt orange cloth folding box Insert & Slipcase featuring a 1/4 crushed Morocco banded spine and gilt titles. Lovely and Scarce thus.
