Original Letter June 8th, 1838. Approx. 9-1/2” by 5-3/4”. Letter concerning a duel between Congressman Jonathan Cilley of Maine and William Graves of Kentucky. The letter discussion the tragic duel and the death of Mr. Cilley is from his second, George W. Jones, addressed to Isaac Rowland of Illinois. Jones was a delegate from the Michigan territory. This duel was quite famous and inspired the pamphlet “The Martyrdom of Cilley” and inspired a wrath of anti-dueling sentiment. Newspaper article framed with original note tells that James Watson Webb sent a note to the Honorable Jonathan Cilley in relation to words spoken in a debate. Mr. Cilley refused any communication from Webb. Mr. Graves, who was a member of Congress from Kentucky acted as Webb’s second and required Cilley to admit that Webb was the gentleman and allow him the satisfaction due him. Mr. Cilley declined any intention to insult Graves and questioned his right to peruse that point. Graves challenged Cilley and the challenge was accepted. The weapons were rifles, distance 80 yards. Upon the 4th fire, Cilley fell and expired. The dispute arose over a corrupt transaction between Webb and Nicholas Biddle.
