(Selznick, 1945) Original matte painting rendered in white paint on black illustration board from the film, Spellbound. This is the icy view outside the window of psychologist Constance Petersen (Ingrid Bergman), and in the key scene of the film when John Ballantine (actor Gregory Peck) falls into a deep demonic trance as he begins to understand the significance of why the color white and parallel lines drive him to insanity and amnesia. Ski tracks left in fresh snow prove to be the defining clue in determining he is not the murderer he is accused of being. The painting has a blacked-out road that runs through the middle of the image, where live action of children skiing were later framed in using photo compositing by visual effects pioneer, Mr. Jack Cosgrove. Inspired matte artists of the golden age of Hollywood were crucial to telling the story, as they could transport us to vast vistas, exotic locales, or magical worlds with little more than a paintbrush and a small canvas. This painting measures 38 in. tall x 48 in. long and housed in an archival frame with silk mat.
