"The Repulse of the British at Boston"
The intense and uncompromising patriotism of the American colonists in their struggle with Great Britain during, and before, the Revolution, expressed itself in social as well as in military matters.
The social aspect of the great controversy is charmingly illustrated by Mr. Samuel Nelson Abbott in this beautiful picture, which has been given the amusing title above. A colonial maid, on her way from market, is accosted by a young and handsome British officer; possibly an acquaintance whose attentions might have been quite acceptable under more peaceful circumstances.
But he now represents to her the country's enemy, in whom she refuses to recognize the social friend.
The amusement of the sentry in the background, at the discomfiture of his officer, adds the necessary touch of comedy.
Mr. Abbott has told a pretty story in a graphic way. In 1872, Harry and Max Hart, German immigrants who arrived in Chicago as boys 14 years earlier, founded Harry Hart & Bro., a small men's clothing store on State Street. (Chicago)
