'Four more miles of slush and snow, uphill nearly all the way, over roaring cataracts, slippery rocks, stumps and brush.' Installment 2 (Jan., 1861) focuses on Carson City; 'a mere accident', 'occupation of the inhabitants, waylaying strangers bound for Virginia,' and Virginia City; 'mud-hole', water, a dilution of arsenic, plumbago and copperas,' 'No title to property; no property worth having.' Installment 3 (Feb., 1861) focuses on his escape from Virginia; 'a perfect hurricane...tents were shivered and torn to shreds,' 'the road is five feet deep and 180 miles long,' 'brandy, whiskey and gin are the only medicines here.'
