Original Griswold and Gunnison .36 caliber Navy revolver, in good to very good original condition, serial number “538” with period crude flap holster. This confederate revolver was purchased by Charles DuPont from James Serven, 4/8/1941. The right side of the barrel and frame are serial numbered “538” as is the cylinder. The metal surfaces show a lightly cleaned grey patina finish with some lightly scattered erosion and pinprick pitting, some slightly heavier pitting on the cylinder, near the breech and near the muzzle. The muzzle has been worn on the right side from being carried in a left hand holster a long way. The frame, triggerguard and backstrap show a pleasing and uncleaned natural patina. A small loss of brass on the back edge of guard from a casting flaw. The grips are very good plus to near fine, showing just some slight wear at the edges. The action is good, the rammer is numbered “38” on the interior. Included is a crudely made, hand-stitched flap holster which shows wear and carry, with replacement of beltloop, repair to flap, and general aging and small losses. This is the first type Griswold revolver with octagonal back of barrel similar to the Colt Dragoon and manufactured at Griswoldville, GA, between 1862 and 1864 by Samuel Griswold. Refer: Flayderman 10-009. Absolutely genuine and an exceptional example which was retained in the DuPont collection nearly 70 years. Est: $12,500 - $25,000
