For your consideration is this original photo of Castle, Montana taken 1889. This photo appears to have been taken in the late winter / early spring time by an unknown photographer. The photo shows an overview of Castle, Montana featuring buildings, barns, roads and trails. Beginning in 1885, F.L. "Lafe" Hensley and his brothers located and developed the Yellowstone, Cumberland, and other mines in Montana's Castle Mountains. In 1887, the first cabin was built on the location that would become Castle (also known as "Castle Town" and "Castle City"). Castle Town had almost 2,000 residents and a thriving business district, including fourteen saloons and seven brothels. Calamity Jane, Castle's most famous tenant, most likely lived there briefly while attempting to operate a restaurant. The restaurant never opened, and Jane moved on to better opportunities. The Cumberland mine, the district's largest producer, closed in 1950, and the town began its final shift to permanent ghost town. The photo shows good condition overall with some wear present to the frame from its age and use but no major signs of damage is noted. The visible photo measures 10 3/8" L x 13 3/8" W, while the entire piece measures 11 3/8" L x 14 1/4" W x 1" D. It has a total weight of 1 pound and 14 ounces.
