Original Elgin cutlass pistol, US martially-marked, .54 caliber, 11” bowie-knife type blade marked “C. B. Allen, Springfield Mass.” Serial number “71”. The pistol remains in original good condition showing a grey patina finish overall and light to moderate scattered surface erosion and pinprick pitting and some heavier pitting on the top of the barrel and a few areas on the blade. The blade shows some nicks at the edges and the point is slightly chipped. The grip is good with a couple of scratches and mars, even wear, and darkening, and a couple large losses and dents. The markings on the left side of the gun are sharp. The blade, frame, and barrel are all numbered “71”. The hammer and screw and all small parts are original. The Elgin’s patent is faint and military markings and date on breech of barrel are obscured by pitting and only partially visible. Action is good, and generally good overall. These Elgin knife-pistols are collectible in three fields: Military, Oddities, and are one of the earliest dateable American Bowie knives. Also the Elgin cutlass pistol is significant in the fact that it is the first percussion pistol adopted by the US military. Provenance: Inventory sheet from the Charles DuPont collection, purchased from Kimball Arms, 12/14/1944. Est: $7,500 - $15,000
