This original animation cel, drawing, and reproduction background are from the Nickelodeon TV show SpongeBob Squarepants. The story takes place under the deep blue sea in Bikini Bottom, where SpongeBob resides. SpongeBob, who is a yellow, porous sponge, is your typical happy-go-lucky character, as he is always cheerful and enjoys making people laugh. Patrick Star, SpongeBob's neighbor who is a starfish, is your average children's show idiot, as he boasts knowing nothing and is often getting himself into ridiculous situations. Between the homes of these two lies the home of the miserable Squidward, a squid, who is known for being grouchy and playing tricks on SpongeBob and Patrick. Both SpongeBob and Squidward work at the Krusty Krab, a fast food business run by the greedy money-loving Mr. Krabs, a crab, the arch rival of the evil, possibly misunderstood, Plankton. Another neighbor, Sandy Cheeks, an athletic squirrel who normally wears an astronaut's space suit, was introduced in "Tea at the Treedome." She spends most of her time inventing and experimenting. Here, Spongebob and a fish friend of his seem to have agreed upon sharing their metal dector. Overall Size of Drawing: 13 1/2" x 16 1/2" Overall Size of Cel: 13 1/2" x 16 1/2" Overall Size of Background: 11" x 17"Very Good ConditionThis is an original hand-painted cel set-up used in the production of an episode of "SpongeBob SquarePants." Each one-of-a-kind set-up represents a slight change in position of the characters. When individually photographed and projected in rapid succession, the images appear to move.
To create production cels, the original animator's drawing is transferred onto an acetate cel (by hand-inking and/or photo copying). The cel is then hand-painted on the reverse side. The background accompanying this set-up is a reproduction background. The cel, background, and drawing are ready to be matted and framed. The animator's notations are at the bottom of the cel and background and the top and bottom of the drawing. The cel is multi-layered: firs is the metal detector, next is the fishes lips, then are the fishes eyes, followed by the remainder of his body, and finally Spongebob. There is some minor paint residue on the second cel and some of the last cel's paint has been affixed to the background. There is a small rip on the right side of the drawing. The Nickelodeon logo is on the bottom right of the first cel.
