Original Cobridge Stoneware Framed Tile Panel, The Potter at Work
A striking and evocative framed tile panel by Cobridge Stoneware, depicting a traditional potter shaping a vessel on a wheel. Originally designed by Philip Gibson, this large-scale ceramic composition is formed from nine individually hand-painted tiles, collectively portraying a detail part of a larger project commissioned as a tile tableau to grace the Cobridge Stoneware factory shop and foyer, depicting an industrial scene rooted in Staffordshire's rich ceramic heritage. The central figure, a craftsman in apron and cap, is set against a background of bottle kilns, pot banks, and shelves of greenware, vividly rendered in earthy glazes and oxides. Each tile is finely detailed with expressive brushwork, showcasing a warm palette of browns, deep greens, reds, and ochres. The scene evokes the craftsmanship and spirit of Stoke-on-Trent's pottery industry during its peak. The piece is mounted in a robust wooden frame with gold edging, and retains its original backing board, which bears a label: Framed for Cobridge Stoneware by The Art Studio, Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire.
