1864 U. S. Navy Regulations allowed officers to wear a short jacket such as this one as "service dress." The navy blue/black wool garment has a roll over collar & is lined with the appropriate, "black silk serge,"nicely quilted. Two pockets are in the breast. The sleeves feature the typical Civil War era flared elbows & narrow cuffs & are lined in white cotton with thin red striping. The collar & front edges are edged in narrow black tape. There are two rows of nine Navy officers buttons on each side, backmarked "Scovill Mfg. Co." Condition is excellent with no mothing & inconsequential wear. The jacket is accompanied by a fine navalofficers sword belt having a high-relief interlocking regulation belt plate depicting an eagle over an anchor surrounded by a circle of stars. The belt is complete, strong & supple & has both suspensory strapshighlighted by large studs bearing an attractive "star" design. Altogether a scarce & wonderful set that would be hard to match for quality.
