A rare and historic Civil War flag originally belonging to the 176th New York State Veteran's Volunteer Infantry. Measures 29” (hoist) x 31” (fly). The 176th New York Infantry, known as the ''Ironsides Regiment,'' was formed in the later part of 1862 and early 1863 and helped defend part of the garrison protecting New Orleans during the siege of Port Hudson. Their most significant work aided General Henry Sheridan’s brilliant campaign in the Shenandoah Valley, fighting against Confederate General Jubal Early in the battles of Berryville, the Opequan, Fisher’s Hill and Cedar Creek. Overall, the regiment had 464 men killed, wounded, captured or missing. The flag which was probably manufactured by the firm of Brandon & Stiles, was likely used towards the later part of the regiment’s involvement on the battlefield. Featuring a bright and vivid royal blue template with gold twisted braid fringes, the flag has large gilt lettering “N.Y.S.V.V. 176th REGIMENT.” with red bordering. The semi-elliptical shield surrounding ''176th'' has bright gold gilt with a red background. There is minor paint chipping throughout and the ID Shield has several tears, typical of battlefield flags. Otherwise, a magnificent and colorful flag that is perfect for display and a cornerstone of one's Civil War collection. Accompanied by auction provenance.
