<Our item number 110903><B>Original Civil War Era Petersburg Wooden Gavel.</B> 8½&#34; wooden gavel bearing an inscribed silver plaque: &#34;This wood from the Battlefield of the Crater, July 30, 1864, Petersburgh, VA.&#34;<BR><BR> On July 30, 1864, the 48th Pennsylvania infantry detonated explosives they had placed in a 511-foot-long tunnel under the Confederate lines at Elliot&#39;s Salient, creating a crater some 135 feet in diameter and instantly killing 280 to 350 Confederate soldiers. Union troops who entered the crater were unable to exit the steep sides and were slaughtered by Confederates firing down on them.
