(Outcault, 1908) An original hand-colored Buster Brown comic strip by Richard F. Outcault. In 1895, Outcault created "The Yellow Kid," considered the first of the modern newspaper comic strip series. It was Outcault's use of word balloons to express dialog, as well as his use of humor and social commentary, that paved the way for the modern comic strip. Outcault followed "The Yellow Kid" with "Buster Brown." First published in the New York Herald in 1902, the series proved to be extremely popular among readers of all ages. In 1904, the character was adopted as the mascot for the Brown Shoe Company, which featured Outcault's creation in advertising and promotions. The strip ended in 1921, but the character remained popular in comic books, movies, theatre, and television well into the 1950s. Created in ink over pencil with watercolor highlights, the comic strip art measures 23"x20". The condition is good with expected wear from age, including some tearing around the edges, most notably near the top of the left edge. There is some minor surface wear throughout.
