This is an original Bob Scriver bronze sculpture titled "Hornaday's Buffalo". Robert Macfie Scriver (1914-1999) was born in Browning, Montana (in the heart of the Blackfoot Indian Reservation) in 1914. Scriver began sculpting using taxidermy to learn his craft of making wildlife bronzes. By 1962 he became a charter member of the Society of Animal Artists, had been accepted into the prestigious Cowboy Artists of America, listed in Who’s Who in American Art, and a member of the National Sculpture Society, and the National Academy of Western Art. Bob Scriver bronzes have been valued at over $30,000-$50,000. He is believed to be "The Cowboy’s National Sculptor" and one of the finest Montana bronze artists of the 20th century. This bronze was created to pay homage to William Hornaday's taxidermy display of six buffalo that was exhibited at the Smithsonian's Natural History Museum from 1887 to 1955. As the buffalo were disappearing from the plains, Hornaday wanted to preserve the buffalo for future generations. In 1955, the taxidermy display was returned to Montana where it was stored until 1996. Funds from the sale of Bob Scriver bronzes helped finance the restoration of the display where it now resides at the Museum of the Northern Great Plains in Fort Benton, Montana. The bronze shows the large buffalo bull from Hornaday's display. The buffalo is shown in spectacular detail as only Bob Scriver could sculpt. The bronze sits on a solid walnut hardwood base with a brass placard that reads "Hornaday's Buffalo / Bob Scriver". The piece shows the artist's signature and is numbered 47/100. The Bob Scriver bronze sculpture is in good condition. It measures 8.5" x 12.25" and is 8.25" tall. Also included with the bronze are two books, a commemorative medal and a Certificate of Authenticity. The books are titled "No More Buffalo" and "The Vanishing West: Hornaday's Buffalo".
