From 13 August 1961 until 9 November 1989, East Berlin was separated from West Berlin by the Berlin Wall. East Berlin was the former Soviet sector of Berlin, established in 1945 at the end of WW II, and was the de facto capital city of the German Democratic Republic from 1949 to 1990. The American, British, and French sectors were known as West Berlin. The ladder was “liberated” on February 19, 1990 by American Dennis Keating who was working as a U.S. DOD contractor at the time. The ladder was crated and shipped back to Mr. Keating’s hometown of Chicago where it has laid stored in a warehouse until this time. Mr. Keating finished his DOD contract and ended up retiring in Hawaii. He contacted Donley Auctions in August of 2021 to sell the ladder. Donley Auctions sent a truck to the warehouse in Argo Illinois to retrieve the crate that had been sitting there since 1990. In addition to the iron ladder and the crate that it was shipped home in, this lot also includes copies of photos of Mr. Keating at the Berlin wall as well as a copy of his travel document from February 18-19, 1990. In 2021, Mr. Keating wrote and published a short book titled, “Destroying the Berlin Wall, One Yank’s Memory” which tells the story of his day at the wall when he “liberated” the ladder and other keepsakes. 3 copies of his book are included. The ladder is constructed of iron and measures 78.5” tall and 12.25” wide. Condition is good, with heavy rust. Comes with the wood shipping crate that it was sent in from Germany to Chicago.
