<B> Engraving, "The Battle at La Hogue" by Benjamin West.</B></I> Colored copper plate engraving by William Wollett, London, 24.5" x 18.5", circa 1781. The celebrated American artist, Benjamin West, was commissioned by King George III to paint patriotic scenes of historic events. The original oil from which this engraving derived celebrates the Royal Navy's defeat of the French off the coast of Normandy at La Hogue in 1692. The engagement effectively neutralized French aspirations to restore James II to the British throne. Shown at left in a red coat with drawn sword is Vice Admiral George Rook, fleet commander and hero of the day. Light browning as expected. Very Fine condition. Professionally mounted in a gilt frame measuring 33.0" x 28.0".
