Judge Parker and the Marshals of the Western District of Arkansas.
After the Civil War, the United States Government added jurisdiction for the Indian Territory to the Federal Court for the Western District of Arkansas. The court, located at Fort Smith, was responsible for 74,000 square miles. Judge Isaac C. Parker sat on the bench for 20 years and during that time employed over 200 Deputy U.S. Marshals to police this vast territory. Parker, who is best remembered today as the Old West’s “Hanging Judge”, said that he could not have held court a single day without his deputies. At least 65 of them were killed in the line of duty. Kranium Crawford was one of Judge Parker’s deputies, having been sworn into office on July 15, 1884.
