Hamburg-Amerika Linie/St Louis
ARTIST : Ottomar Anton (1895-1976)

This impressive Art Deco execution renders both the St. Louis and its sister ship the Milwaukee at a time when they provided the most sizable caribbean service for Hamburg-Amerika. In less proud times the St. Louis was involved in one of history's most shameful footnotes - setting sail from Hamburg carrying 900 Jewish emigrants fleeing Nazi tyranny, the ship was turned away by callous officials of both Cuba and the United States.
Anton was a native of Hamburg who started working for a local agency there, but from 1921 on, had his own studio where he produced a large body of work for Hapag, the big transatlantic conglomerate. Later, he became an art instructor at the Bremen high school of art.
