Four years before joining Big Brother and The Holding Company and setting the world on fire with her Monterey Pop Festival performances that on May 18, 1963 Janis entered the Saturday afternoon "Folk Talent Show & Sing" and won three singing contests that afternoon!
The festival schedule lists:
1. May 17: Peter Paul & Mary, Greenbriar Boys, Lightnin' Hopkins, The Dillards.
2. May 18 Folk Talent Show and Sing (which included Janis Joplin although she is not mentioned by name in the program) for the 1:30 pm slot and BOB DYLAN in his first major West Coast appearance, The New Lost City Ramblers, Mance Lipscomb, and others.
3. May 19 featured Erik Darling, The Rooftop Singers, Clarence Ashley, Doc Watson, Lightnin' Hopkins and others.
