(Universal, 1979) An original painting created for the promotion of Steven Spielberg's wartime comedy film, "1941". The artwork is hand-painted and comes from the collection of its artist, Peter Green. Spielberg personally commissioned Green to work on a series of publicity graphics to help him promote the film. As Green recalls, "Steven needed to promote the film, but he was having trouble showing the full scope of it. He wanted to create a series of illustrations that showcased various key scenes in the film. Initially, my friend and fellow illustrator Dave McMacken was chosen for the project. Dave was working on the film's poster already, but due to time constraints, he couldn't also do the promotional artwork. Dave knew me and my similar wacky style, so he recommended me, and Steven loved and ended up using all of the artwork I brought him." The painting depicts Ward Douglas (Ned Beatty) and his wife, Joan (Lorraine Gray) sighting the Japanese sub while Sgt. Treat (Dan Aykroyd), PFC Foley (John Candy), and the tank crew return fire. It has a few printed underlying outlines, which have been heavily painted over with acrylic, marker, and airbrushed details as well as applied elements on a large sheet of art board to form this final artwork. Measuring 30"x39", the painting is in good condition with moderate surface wear, including chipping and cracking to the grass and some lifting to the applied elements.
